SMUGGLER STREET RESIDENCE
This house was built in response to the client’s desire to split his lot in Aspen’s historic West End and build a contemporary living space for his personal use on one half of the lot, while preserving and renovating the existing 1890s mining cabin on the other half. The public spaces of the new house (living room, dining room and kitchen) are on the upper level, taking advantage of the enormous views of Aspen Mountain and Independence Pass, with the private spaces (bedrooms) on the main level. Although stylistically different from its historic neighbor, the design of the new house maintains the established neighborhood scale and patterns found in the West End.
